How to Add Comment Zones

Pinned comments let participants attach observations to any element on your page during a usability research session — the visual-feedback layer that scripted questions can't capture.

What are comment zones?

How pinned comments work for participants:

Comments tab is always available

Once the participant has started the test from the side panel, they can click the Comments tab at any time to drop into pin mode and attach an observation to any element on the page.

Screenshots are automatic

When a user pins a comment, ProdExam automatically captures a screenshot with the pin location marked.

Context is preserved

You'll see exactly what the participant was looking at when they left the observation.

How comments work

Pinned comments are always available while a test is live — there's nothing to enable. As soon as your participant clicks Start Test in the SDK panel, they see a Comments tab next to the question flow and can pin observations anywhere on the page at any point.

If you want a test that's just comments (no scripted questions), set the test mode to Comments Only when you create the test, or set it as your default in Settings → Preferences.

What users see

When comment zones are active:

  1. User hovers over the page and sees a subtle cursor change

  2. User clicks to place a pin

  3. A text field appears for them to enter their comment

  4. User submits the comment

  5. Screenshot is captured with the pin location

Viewing comments in results

  1. Go to your test's Results page

  2. Click the "Comments" tab

  3. Browse the screenshot gallery

  4. Each screenshot shows the pin location and comment text

  5. Filter by page, sentiment, or date

Best practices

Encourage pins on complex pages

Pinned comments work best on pages with many UI elements where participants might have specific observations to share.

Combine with questions

Start with a question like "Was anything confusing?" then let users point to specific elements.

Use for visual feedback

Comment zones are ideal for design feedback, accessibility issues, or confusing UI patterns.
